Our School
Education is the Key to Better Future
In Haiti, 60% of kids grow up in poverty and <20% of kids make it past the 6th grade. Education is one of the best ways to lift a child, family or community out of poverty.
In 2019, we started a school with only a 7th grade class. We now run 9 grades and are one of the leading schools in the region, touching the lives of hundreds of kids.
Progress Update:
Added classroom capacity for 4 new grades
We have added grades 1, and 4-12 since 2019
Chosen as a regional testing center for the Department of Education's annual testing (in addition to being a district training center for teachers and administrators). More than 2,000 students will come through our doors for testing next year. This is a great honor and shows the incredible work that our staff is doing there.
We are the only school with a septic system, solar power and a computer lab (many of the kids have never touched a laptop before). We are also one of the few schools that consistently pays its teachers; making education a financially viable profession.
Remaining Priorities:
Add the final 4 grades/classrooms that will make our school grades 1-13 (covering primary and secondary education in Haiti)
Expand use of our facility to offer after school access to neighborhood kids not attending school, and parents looking for additional skills
Restrooms and solar needs to be expanded to scale and support increased capacity
Lack of Quality Schools Drives Poverty in Haiti
Thousands of schools were leveled in the 2010 earthquake and never rebuilt. Without an education, it’s nearly impossible to break out of poverty. With virtually no public education, Haiti has the worst education statistics in the western hemisphere, and some of the worst in the world:
80% of kids don’t make it past 6th grade
39% of Haitians can’t read
75% of schools have no power
55% of schools don’t have toilets, almost none have a septic
40% don't have clean water
